In His Eyes A Civil War Romance Stephenia H McGee 9781635640083 Books
I was drawn into Ella & Westley's story from the very first chapter. From the very beginning to the very last page, the story never lost momentum. With dynamic, realistic characters and colorful descriptions, I was more than just reading a story on a page, I felt like I was participating in the story. I laughed, I cried, and loved every moment. I hated to see it come to an end.Ella had a difficult, painful past and she struggled with feelings of inadequacy. She had to learn how God see's her, before she can learn to trust others. I think this is true for all of us. It is all to easy to let self-doubt cloud our vision and to forget who we are. We are His and we are loved.
Westley grew-up with loving, accepting parents. He enjoyed an idyllic childhood. He had always been the strong, independent type. The injury to his leg quickly reminds him that he's not quite as invincible as he thought. He must first learn to accept that he needs help, not just from his fellow-man but also from God.
I loved how this story seamlessly included the gentle reminders of God's love for us and the importance of our reliance upon Him, without coming across pushy or like you are reading a sermon. It's was ever so soft, just like a whisper.

In His Eyes A Civil War Romance Stephenia H McGee 9781635640083 Books Reviews
In His EyesA Civil War Romance by Stephanie H. McGee actually begins as the War of Northern Aggression was in the final days of its era. A destitute worker in what passed as an inn tended to a woman giving birth to a child. As the mother is known to be a harlot, the proprietess wants nothing to do with her and will not help. So Ella, the destitute worker, delivers the boy and when the mother dies, takes the child to a plantation known for helping in such situations. Finding despicable Yankees attempting to bully their way into the plantation home, Ella pretends to be the owner's wife and cons them into a couple weeks of respite. Then the owner, thought to be desd, shows up and sparks start to fly. A good storyline that would have been better with some good proof work. Recommended for those who enjoy Civil War era romances.
A small insight into a tragic occurrence in many southern families during the mid 19th century that severed family loyalties for many years after the war was over. I really liked this account of the very real dynamics of dealing with the uncertainties and difficulties for soldiers, families and, in the South, the freed slaves when the traumatized men returned home. The devastation of homes, property, towns, source of income and, most of all, families would have been impossible to surpass without a strong and abiding faith in our Creator God to give help, guidance and perseverance in restoring the South. Wesley gave the reader a glimpse of the southern West Point graduate who had committed his loyalty to the Federal Government but still loved his family and home in Mississippi. Ella, the product of a love marriage between an educated and wealthy mother and a working class father, has been left destitute and homeless. Sibby, a freed slave, had been taught to read and write by the deceased mother of Wesley and is living on his family plantation and maintaining the house and property with a high degree of intelligence and ingenuity since the death of his father. All these characters are admirable but reflect the very human and realistic frailties of the culture and time.
As a christian and a southerner myself I am pleased to recommend this book and will be looking for more of her works.

One Amazing Read! From page one I was drawn into Ella's world. I could see her in my mind's eye; her actions were as vivid as if I were there. Thanks Stephenia for taking me into this wonderful world, a world long gone but still alive in your stories. The grace and mercy shown by Ella captured my heart. And, while we often anticipate the lead characters will end up as a couple, this 'romance' was not like others I'd read about. Great job in making their journey so unpredictable! Every time I thought I knew where Ella and Westley's romance was headed, McGee would surprise me...much to my delight! Mix in an orphaned baby, a dead harlot, nosey neighbors, a rogue housekeeper, a mystery behind the woods… wow, what a ride! My favorite McGee book to date; can’t wait for the next one!
Such a well written historical fiction of post-Civil war era. I was quickly drawn into the drama of Ella trying to help a woman in a unfortunate situation. She has to continually defend herself as she attempts to help others and save the mansion for a person she has never met. I have read Tamera Alexander's novels involving Belmont mansion in TN and so I was intrigued - and almost confused- when I first discovered this book. It portrays the Mansion in a different way but was also a great read. THE WHISTLE WALK by this same author was really a challenging and fascinating book.
Excellent. Ella & Westley. Ella takes a baby from a mother who died in childbirth and heads to the Remington plantation in Mississippi because she has been told that they will not turn her away and will provide a wet nurse for the baby whom she names Westley the master of the plantation, she pretends to be master Westleys wife in order for her to keep living on his plantation. What a surprise for him when he finally returns home from the war. They both understand the way of war, but with opposing views. This story bears a strong Christian witness. A vivid picture of what our country had become post War Between the States. Ella finally concludes that in the Lords eyes she was priceless, and Strength is not the same as independence. Vivid exciting story.
